January 12, New Mexico

Updated: Jan 23, 2022

Thanks to all the people who share sightings on ebird, I knew the exact spot I needed to be in by dawn today. Five of us stood very still from 6:30 until 7:19 when the Blue Mockingbird put in a brief appearance. It landed on the back side of the tree were were staring at. It ate hackberries for about a minute, and did not return in the next five hours.

I was very happy to add this bird to my annual list and life list. i also added Pyrrhuloxia to my life list and five additional birds to my list for 2022.

After spending the morning at Rattlesnake Springs it was time to make my way to San Antonio to catch my flight back to Detroit. At one point I drove over 100 miles without seeing a building of any kind. I always start each road trip with a full gas tank and an empty bladder. That really came in handy today.

I will post again later this month when I go to California.

Pyrrhuloxia - a close relative of the Northern Cardinal

Green-tailed Towhee

Would you want to have a picnic at a place with the word "rattlesnake" in its name?
